No. 1 Kansas 71, Cornell 66: Big Red Fall Short Against Jayhawks
January 6, 2010 – Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) – Sherron Collins almost single-handedly extended top-ranked Kansas’ homecourt winning streak to 51 games, scoring a career-best 33 points and pushing the Jayhawks to a 71-66 victory over Cornell at a jam-packed Allen Fieldhouse.
It was an Allen Fieldhouse crowd not expecting to witness near defeat Wednesday night, as Ivy League stalwart Cornell (12-3) led by eight in the second half and was still ahead before Collins’ three-point play with 41.3 ticks to play.
Two of the nation’s top three three-point shooting teams fired a combined 41 treys in the contest. Ryan Wittman tossed up 14 of those tries, making five and leading the Big Red with 24 points. Jeff Foote added 12 points and six rebounds in defeat.
Collins was supported by Xavier Henry’s 14 points and Cole Aldrich’s 13 points and nine rebounds. Kansas (14-0) trailed 41-38 at the half, the first time it has trailed at intermission this season, but rallied to keep the nation’s longest homecourt winning streak going.
