With the Yankees having advanced to the ALCS after a first-round sweep of the Twins, it's left people with a lot of time to wonder what their lineup and rotation are going to look like going forward now that they're looking at a best-of-seven series. The latter was the biggest question. Would the Yankees keep their CC Sabathia/Andy Pettitte/Phil Hughes rotation intact, or would they stretch to include a fourth starter? And who would that fourth starter be?
Yankees Leaning Towards Four-Man Rotation For ALCS
Seems we’ve got the answer:
Appears Yankees going with four rotation in ALCS, Cashman says. AJ appears to be the guy.
A.J. Burnett was famously poor down the stretch, posting a 6.61 ERA over August and September. However, the Yankees' choice essentially came down to him, Dustin Moseley, or a three-man rotation, and Moseley hasn't proven anything, while going with a three-man rotation would force Sabathia, Pettitte, and Hughes to work on short rest. The ALCS schedule simply doesn't allow for easy rotation shrinking.
The situation, of course, is subject to change, especially if the Yankees find themselves behind in the series headed into Game 4. Burnett is the guy now, but he may not be the guy when gameday arrives.
