Chargers LB Shawne Merriman Headed To Injured Reserve

Here's a surprise: Chargers LB Shawne Merriman has been placed on injured reserve for what is believed to be a calf injury.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune reports it’s a “minor injury designation” which means the Chargers will release him when he’s healthy. His time in San Diego is over. It’s hard to see him ever returning to San Diego.

Merriman entered the season dealing with an Achilles’ injury but was able to finally get on the field. He left the Chargers Week 3 game with a calf injury, and missed Week 4, but most recently was able to play in Week 5.

As recently as the first week of October reports suggested he was on the trade block and was “not on solid footing” with the Chargers. He was a candidate to be traded, if he were healthy, before the Oct. 19 NFL trade deadline.

At this point, it’s hard to envision a scenario of Merriman ever lining up as a Charger again. He’s played in just 18 games since the end of 2007 and has just four sacks in that time frame.
