Giants' Mathias Kiwanuka is expected to be placed on injured reserve ending his 2010 season, according to Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger. Kiwanuka has been out since Week 3 with a nagging pain in his neck, later revealed to be caused by a herniated disc.
Mathias Kiwanuka’s Neck Injury Expected To End His Season
Clearly something isn’t right with the injury because Kiwanuka hasn’t played since Week 3. That he was on the roster to this point suggests the Giants figured he had a chance of returning. However, it was revealed last week that there’s been virtually no change to his status.
“I don’t think anything has changed,” coach Tom Coughlin said during his press conference. “I don’t have anything at this point to tell you other than he traveled to L.A., he came back and (from) the information I get, there is no change.”
Doctors are “very optimistic” that it will heal but it’s something that will take time. The Giants feel that the healing process will take long enough that it renders his placement on IR.
So how will this affect the Giants season? Probably not much. They were 1-2 with Kiwanuka this season and 4-0 without him. I’m not saying he’s the reason they lost but I am saying that they’ve shown they can win without him.
Who knows what this means to Kiwanuka’s future. He’s entering a contract year and it appears he won’t get a big money deal now.
