At least one Mexican team will advance to the CONCACAF Champions League final and could very well meet a MLS team there.
Real Salt Lake Draw Columbus Crew In CCL Quarterfinals
All four Mexican teams were placed in the same side of the CCL draw, setting up a pair of all-Mexican quarterfinal matches. Top-seeded Monterrey will play Toluca in one quarterfinal and Santos Laguna will play Cruz Azul in the other.
On the other side of the bracket, the two remaining MLS teams — the Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake — play one another with Saprissa and Olimpia playing in the other quarterfinal.
The quarterfinals are played as two-legged aggregates with the seeded team hosting the second leg. The first leg will be played Feb. 22-24 and the second leg will be March 1-3.
For the MLS teams, this sets up a scenario where either Saprissa or Olimpia would have to travel to cities where temperatures could be around freezing in mid-March.
“Competitively, the 2010/11 CONCACAF Championship Stage draw between Real Salt Lake and the Columbus Crew has resulted in a level playing field due to both teams being at the same stage of preseason and hailing from similar climates in February and March,” RSL General Manager Garth Legerway said in a statement.
“The two-leg series will surely be a hard-fought battle with another MLS team, who like us has been rewarded for placing maximum effort into this regional competition.”
