Royals Trade David DeJesus To A’s For Vin Mazzaro, Prospect

Royals outfielder David DeJesus was the subject of widespread trade rumors last July, up until a thumb injury knocked him out for the rest of the season. However, once November rolled along, Kansas City wasted little time in getting the ball rolling once more, completing a trade that sends the veteran out West.

Over 91 games in 2010, DeJesus batted .318 for the Royals with a .384 OBP. His average is exactly .300 since the start of 2008, and he fits the Oakland mold pretty well; he makes contact, he has a decent eye, he has gap power, and he plays strong defense. With 2011 being the final year of his existing contract, he was expendable for the Royals, and he’ll be a part of an A’s team that’s looking to contend in the short term.

Coming back to Kansas City are Vin Mazzaro and Justin Marks. Mazzaro has a 4.72 ERA over parts of two seasons in the Oakland rotation, and the 24 year old righty works primarily off of a fastball in the low 90s. He has not been blessed with outstanding stuff, but has been able to hold his own from a young age. Marks, meanwhile, turns 22 in January, and struck out more than a batter an inning in A-ball last season. The lefty was drafted in the 37th round by the Red Sox in 2006.

The A’s were rumored to be looking to trade an arm for a bat after buying the rights to Hisashi Iwakuma. This is that trade, and their fans ought to be pretty happy. Be sure to check out more at Royals Review and Athletics Nation.
