Most people don't think of the Marlins as having a very aggressive front office, but early on the 2010 offseason, we're seeing a bit of a change. Not only are they actively looking to trade Dan Uggla - according to Ken Rosenthal, they're also nearing a three-year contract with free agent catcher John Buck.
John Buck, Marlins Nearing Three-Year Contract
Via Jon Morosi, we learn that the contract will be worth more than $15 million.
The Marlins have been seeking catching help after getting little from the position in 2010, and the 30-year-old Buck fits the mold. The career American Leaguer has spent six years in Kansas City and, most recently, one in Toronto, where he batted .281 with 20 home runs and a .489 slugging percentage. It was the second consecutive strong offensive season from the once highly-touted backstop prospect, and the Marlins will hope that he’s able to bring that power over to a new team.
Buck isn’t much to write home about defensively, and he’s ordinarily a low-average hitter who strikes out a lot and seldom walks. His big plus is his strength, which makes him similar to fellow free agent and ex-Marlin Miguel Olivo. He is only a few years removed from a disappointing 2008 and is by no means a guarantee to perform, especially over three years. But he’s not a bad gamble.
