At age 34, former world No. 1 Carlos Moya will play his last tournament in December.
Carlos Moya To End His Career In December In Home Country Of Spain
Copa del Rey, a tournament held in Madird, will invite the Spaniard to play. Currently ranked 519th in the world, Moya is said to bid adios in his home country.
Sources close to the Mallorca native told the German Press Agency dpa that he is set to announce that officially at a press conference Wednesday in Madrid.
In his 15 years on the ATP tour, Moya compiled a 575-319 record, with 20 titles, including Roland Garros in 1998. When Moya received his world No. 1 ranking in 1998, he was the first Spaniard to do so since 1973. He beat the U.S. in the Davis Cup final in 2004.
Moya has been dealing with injuries since last year. In April 2009, he underwent hip surgery for osteoarthritis in his right foot. He played only 15 matches in the 2009-2010 season. He last played on May 9, 2010 when he was defeated by German Benjamin Becker 6-0, 6-2.
Beyond physical problems, actress Carolina Cerezuela, and above all baby Carla, who was born on August 18, have a large portion of the blame for the decision that any sports person fears and postpones: to say goodbye to the activity that brought them success, fame and money.
‘I want a dignified retirement,’ Moya said in April 2009.
