Heralded freshman Josh Selby, sitting out while the NCAA ruled on his eligibilty, will be allowed to return Dec. 18 against the USC Trojans. An NCAA investigation found Selby had taken $5,757.58 in improper benefits prior to signing with Kansas. He will also have to repay that amount to the charity of his choice.

The investigation into his eligibility stemmed from allegations that Selby had taken benefits from Bay Frazier, a business manager for Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. A New York Times article examined the relationship back in April and the opening paragraph in that article that raised some eyebrows.
Last Friday evening, Josh Selby, the nation’s most explosive high school guard yet to commit to a college, walked out the back door of Lake Clifton High School here with the Tennessee assistant Steve Forbes. The two kept chatting as they approached a light-blue Mercedes-Benz with tinted windows. Selby, keys in hand, popped the trunk, threw sneakers in it and joked with Forbes. Selby said goodbye, and drove away.
In ruling Selby ineligible for the first nine games of the season, the NCAA acknowledged that any added benefits for recruits -- including transportation, food and housing -- are impermissible, even if they come from a family friend. Frazier, in this case, was a family friend of Selby and was working as an advisor during the recruitment process.
In a quote to ESPN, Kansas head coach Bill Self acknowledged the misstep and understood the punishment that resulted.
“Even though there was no ill intent by Josh and his family, we and they understand there are consequences if rules are violated,” said Kansas coach Bill Self.
Selby was the No. 1 recruit in the nation for the class of 2010 and was tabbed as an immediate impact player for the Jayhawks. In his absence, Kansas is 3-0 this season. Selby will miss a showdown with No. 19 Memphis on Dec. 7, as well as games against UCLA and Arizona.
