The Texas Rangers may have just lost the World Series in a disappointing five games, but it isn't all bad news for Ron Washington. Not only does he get to reflect on the fact that he took his team nearly all the way; he also gets to look ahead to remaining in place for a few years to come.
Rangers Manager Ron Washington To Get Contract Extension
Manager Ron Washington will be getting a contract extension on Thursday. No details yet but he is scheduled to sit down with club president Nolan Ryan and general manager Jon Daniels to work out the new contract. It will likely be 2-3 years in length.
Washington has been in charge for four years, and originally signed a two-year contract with 2009 and 2010 options. Those options were exercised, and the second one expired with Monday’s Game 5 loss. Pleased with Washington’s leadership, the Rangers are now going to keep him around.
It’s a new chapter in a story that earlier threatened to come to a sudden conclusion when Washington admitted to the use of cocaine. The team rallied behind its skipper and came within three wins of celebrating a championship, and now all eyes are looking to the future. After such a successful season, it has been determined that Washington is the right man for the job.
It’s worth noting that the Rangers’ win total has increased each season under Washington, from 75 to 79 to 87 to 90.
