ESPN reports two different groups have contacted Minnesota Vikings CEO Zygi Wolf about moving the team to Los Angeles. One group included Magic Johnson, who last night announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he's partnered with AEG and former Minnesota Timberwolves CEO Tim Leiweke in an effort to bring the NFL to Los Angeles.
Magic Johnson And Former Timberwolves CEO Trying To Bring Minnesota Vikings To Los Angeles
I think the owners want a team here. I think the commissioner wants it here. And we want it here, as the fans who live here. WE miss the NFL being here. I think they’d probably have to be an existing team ... I’m sure there’s some teams out there that would be willing to move here.
Los Angeles-based AEG, who already owns shares of the Lakers, Kings, and Galaxy, was previously rumored to be in the running for a 35 percent purchase of the San Diego Chargers, which the Chargers denied earlier today. The Bolts have been trying to get a new stadium for years, and a move a few hours north has been one proposed solution for quite a while. The Chargers were founded in Los Angeles in 1960, moving to San Diego a year later.
The other group that has had contact with Wolf is led by billionaire Ed Roski, a real estate tycoon who’s worked with AEG before on the development of L.A.‘s Staples Center. Roski’s stadium proposal, a LEED-certified, futuristic, 75,000-seat complex built into the side of a hill, is perhaps the most eye-catching harbinger of Los Angeles football, though it’s hard to say how realistic it is.
