Despite finishing with a 9-3 record, West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart has been on shaky ground in recent weeks. Speculation has run rampant over whether or not the 58-year-old coach will return for a fourth season with the program. Despite going 28-11 in three seasons at WVU and leading the program to it’s sixth-straight season with at least nine wins, many feel Stewart just isn’t the guy to take the team to the next level.
Bill Stewart Could Be Out At West Virginia After Bowl Game, According To Report
Monday, rumors spread like wildfire that Stewart had been informed during a team meeting earlier in the day that the Champs Sports Bowl will be his final game as head coach. His replacement was apparently already selected, Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen.
West Virginia has since refuted the rumor and explained that there’s no way the meeting could have taken place since all the coaches are on the road recruiting.
But where there’s smoke...
West Virginia AD Oliver Luck has refused to give Stewart a full-on vote of confidence. When asked about a scheduled contact with Holgorsen a few weeks ago, Luck responded, “I’m just not going to say anything.”
Holgorsen had also been a candidate for the Pitt vacancy but that is now off the table.
And that’s where we are. The Post-Gazette says it appears likely that Stewart will be fired if the Mountaineers don’t beat North Carolina State in the bowl game, and that he maybe be fired even if WVU does win.
