Brian Rolston Put On Waivers As Devils Attempt To Move Salary

The New Jersey Devils are trying to rid themselves of the albatross that is Brian Rolston and his $5.0625 million contract. The Devils will assign Rolston to the AHL's Albany Devils, which they are able to do since they already placed him on waivers earlier this season.

Rolston’s been placed on re-entry waivers, meaning he’s available to the rest of the league at half price against the salary cap. The Devils would be on the hook for the other half for the remainder of his contract, which expires after the 2011-12 season, should a team claim him off re-entry.

Yes, the Devils plan is to pay a guy ~$2.53 million against the cap to play for another team. Desperate times, desperate measures and all that.

More details from Tom Gulitti, Devils beat writer at the Bergen Record:

Lamoriello said Rolston has not been assigned to Albany yet, but will be later today. He then must report to Albany before being placed on re-entry waivers, so the earliest he can be placed on re-entry waivers is noon on Wednesday.

Lamoriello said it was was not definite that Rolston will be placed on re-entry waivers on Wednesday, but it will happen eventually. He would not comment when asked if he believes another team will claim Rolston.
