Bronson Arroyo had an eight-figure 2011 option that the Cincinnati Reds picked up last month. But the Reds were dissatisfied with the idea of only having Arroyo around for one more year, so they've gone ahead and negotiated a three-year contract extension through 2013.
Bronson Arroyo Signs Three-Year Contract Extension With Reds Worth $35 Million
Arroyo's contract will be worth $35 million, making him one of the highest-paid players on the team. It's comparable to the three-year, $33 million contract signed by Ted Lilly with the Dodgers earlier in the offseason, and it's also similar to the deal Jorge de la Rosa recently signed with the Rockies.
The 33-year-old Arroyo threw 215.2 innings over 33 starts last year with the Reds, posting a 3.88 ERA that was up just a tick from 2009’s 3.84. While Arroyo isn’t known for his strikeouts or pinpoint command, he throws a broad array of pitches to keep batters off balance, and he excels at soaking up a lot of innings. Arroyo has reached or exceeded the 200-inning mark for six consecutive seasons.
