Slugger Melvin Guillard’s (23-8-2 MMA, 6-4 UFC) tour of the UFC lightweight division’s best submission fighters isn’t over just yet.
MMAjunkie.com has learned from sources close to the organization that Guillard and Brazilian Thiago Tavares (14-3-1 MMA, 4-3-1 UFC) have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 114.
While not yet officially announced by the organization, UFC 114 is expected to take place on May 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Melvin Guillard v. Thiago Tavares at UFC 114
Guillard has been forced to run a gauntlet of submission artists in his time in the UFC and in his last five fights he’s won four. The lone loss in that period was to Nate Diaz in a fight that Guillard was winning with his striking prior to falling head first into a guillotine choke.
Tavares has had an up and down career in the UFC, most recently picking up a draw against Nik Lentz. Tavares was winning the fight but a low blow by him in the final round led to a draw on two judge’s scorecards.
