Even at the beginning of the year, we knew the New York Knicks didn’t care about this season. The roster was full of mediocre players with contracts that expired this summer—just in time for 2010 free agency and a run at Lebron James.
Who Says The Knicks Need Lebron?
And this week, when the Knicks traded away what little talent they had left, you could hear the guffaws leaguewide. Totally transparent, the Knicks have given up on winning now. They used the trade deadline not to improve the team—or even pretend to improve—but to bolster their position for this summer’s Lebron sweepstakes. As one beat writer joked at the outset of tonight’s game:
Not introduced tonight: the Knicks’ projected $31.5 million in cap space.
But wait wait wait… Tracy McGrady! And Eddie House! Surprisingly decent!
McGrady had 26 points and 5 assists, while Eddie House had 24 points off the bench. The Knicks eventually lost to the Thunder, but still. If you’re a Knicks fan, this has to be semi-exciting right? McGrady looked surprisingly spry and House provided a spark off the bench, but more than that, the Knicks were interesting for the first time in months. Watching on TV and hearing the accounts from people in the building, there was legitimate buzz created by McGrady. So just for fun... Try saying this out loud:
“Who needs Lebron James when you’ve got Tracy McGrady and Eddie House?”
