In 1983, the Redskins won the Superbowl thanks in part to defensive end Dexter Manley. The “Secretary of Defense,” as he was called, would be banned from the NFL years later for failing multiple drug tests. His life spiraled into cocaine addiction, and things got so bad that Manley actually pawned his Super Bowl ring.

↵Manley reacquired the ring in 1999, but was so unsure of his ability to hold onto it that he entrusted it to his lawyer. Having defeated his addiction once and for all, Manley finally has his ring back.
↵↵This week, while in Miami for Sunday’s Super Bowl, the man nicknamed the “Secretary of Defense” was both ecstatic and wistful when his wife, Lydia, called from his hometown of Houston to say she’d retrieved the iconic ring from the estate of the late lawyer John O’Quinn, Manley’s longtime friend and sometime employer with whom he’d entrusted the redeemed ring.
