Atlanta Thrashers Sign 48-Year-Old Chris Chelios

At 48 years old, Chris Chelios was signed by the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday in their second decision in as many days involving a defenseman. Yesterday, Atlanta sent prospect Nathan Oystrick to Anaheim in exchange for forward Evgeny Artyukhin.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion and Norris Trophy winner, Chelios has played with Atlanta’s AHL club, the Chicago Wolves, this season recording five goals, 21 points and a plus-35 rating in 44 contests. The Thrashers will keep him with the Wolves when he clears waivers and will utilize him if necessary.

Atlanta's back line already consists of Pavel Kubina, Tobias Enstrom, Ron Hainsey, Zach Bogosian, Mark Popovic and Johnny Oduya while Christoph Schubert and Boris Valabik are on injured reserve. Schubert and Kubina are set to be unrestricted free agents in the summer and Chelios could be useful if either moves away.
