Brewers: Reliever Todd Coffey had his roughest outing of the spring Wednesday, allowing three runs in an inning of work, but had a good excuse for it: He was pitching with a ruptured eardrum. He’s expected to be re-examined Thursday...Ken Macha is serious about convincing Carlos Gomez to remain focused on getting on base, and has enlisted the help of Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks and hitting coach Dale Sveum to drive the point home.
Around NL Central Spring Training, 4/1: Camps Wrap Up
Cardinals: The team got some good news Wednesday, when a CT scan revealed nothing more than a bone bruise on catcher Jason LaRue’s left hand. He’s day-to-day and could be good to go for Opening Day.
Reds: Aroldis Chapman successfully completed a two inning relief outing Wednesday, but is unsure when he’ll pitch next. Chapman will likely open the season in the minors.
Astros: Wandy Rodriguez had yet another forgettable outing in the Grapefruit League, allowing nine runs on nine hits to the Braves in just 2.1 innings Wednesday. He’s allowed 28 runs in 19.1 innings of work this spring, the most by a pitcher in either league, and has had just one outing where he’s allowed fewer than three earned runs.
Cubs: Carlos Zambrano made his final Cactus League appearance Wednesday, and told Carrie Muskat he’s working on keeping his emotions in check and is hoping to throw 220 innings this season. He averaged 215 innings per season from 2003-2007 but pitched just 169.1 in 2009.
Pirates: Zach Duke was roughed up in his final Grapefruit League start, allowing eight runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings to the Tigers but told Dejan Kovacevic he felt good and is ready to go...at 7-18, the Pirates have the worst spring training record in baseball, a game behind the 9-18 Nationals.
