Around AL East Spring Training, 4/1: Atchison, Schoeneweis Fill Out Red Sox Bullpen

Blue Jays: Pitcher Marc Rzepczynski is expected to miss six weeks of action after taking a line drive off his hand on Tuesday. Rzepczynski was battling for a spot in the Jays’ rotation before his injury. ... Jays’ new general manager Alex Anthopoulos has a tall task in front of him steering his team through a difficult AL East.

Orioles: Baltimore traded for Cardinals infielder Julio Lugo on Thursday and to many’s surprise, it wasn’t an April Fool’s Day joke. But who’s paying his salary? The Boston Red Sox. ... After losing the backup catcher job, Chad Moeller was granted his release by the Orioles Thursday.

Rays: Outfielder Matt Joyce will start the season on the disabled list. Also in the article, Hank Blalock still hasn’t been named to the Opening Day roster yet. ... The Rays signed Cuban left-handed pitcher Sergio Espinosa. Espinosa is the latest international free agent signings made by the Rays, who also signed Cuban Leslie Anderson last month.

Red Sox: Scott Atchison and Scott Schoeneweis were the victors in the race for the Red Sox bullpen. Atchison and Schoeneweis edged out veterans Joe Nelson and Alan Embree. Brian Shouse, who was also in the race, was cut last week. ... Sox pitching prospect Junichi Tazawa will miss the season as it was announced Thursday he will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Yankees: Mark Teixeira returned from his sore elbow injury to notch two hits on Thursday. He doubled, singled and scored a run in the Yankees’ 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays. ... Phil Hughes, who will not debut until April 15 as the Yankees’ fifth starter, will head to extended spring training during the season to get some work in.
