In our last update we said that Shahid Khan would be willing to purchase the Rams should Stan Kroenke’s bid fail to pass the NFL’s cross-ownership rules. As recently as last month’s owners’ meetings, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated a Kroenke approval would be unlikely.
Stan Kroenke ‘Expected’ To Gain NFL’s Approval To Purchase Rams
We should expect all parties to emphasize process over the coming weeks, but it’s an upset if Kroenke’s efforts fail. There’s little chance a man with Kroenke’s financial credentials and knowledge of the NFL would exercise this option in vain, is there?
ESPN’s Mike Sando suggests that this could mean Kroenke has been working with the NFL to get a deal done. That would mean Kroenke would only make this move if he knew it would be approved.
SB Nation’s Rams community, Turf Show Times, has an excellent look at what a Kroenke-owned team would mean for the Rams.
There’s also the labor agreement that has yet to be resolved (and looking like a case of financial brinkmanship on par with the Cuban Missile Crisis ). Kroenke might be very well convinced that the situation will resolve itself in a manner favorable to owners, and wants to jump into the NFL’s most elite group when the buy-in is low.
Ah, the NFL labor negotiations. There’s potentially millions of dollars on the line for the owners so I think this is an important point.
