MMA Fighting spoke to B.J. Penn who shared the following news about a potential rematch with the man who took his title, Frankie Edgar:
B.J. Penn v. Frankie Edgar Rematch In The Works
“The UFC contacted us yesterday, and I think they want to put a rematch together, so I think a rematch is in the works,” Penn said Tuesday morning in an interview with 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C.
Asked when that rematch would take place, Penn indicated that he thinks he, Edgar and the UFC are all prepared to do it quickly.
“I think the next three months, four months at the most,” Penn said.
There are some planned shows on the UFC schedule in that 3-4 month window including the first ever show the promotion will hold in Boston on August 28.
Given some of the scoring controversies and the fact that Penn is, without a doubt, the greatest lightweight in the history of the sport there should be no need for Penn to have to take a tune-up fight before getting the rematch. Also, there just isn’t a clear cut good fight to go against Edgar outside of Penn. Gray Maynard’s name keeps getting bounced around but he barely squeaked by Nate Diaz and Maynard/Penn certainly doesn’t sound like a big money fight.
If the oddsmakers set Penn at anything less than a -450 favorite heading in to the rematch it will be the best line you’ll have to bet on all year. A motivated, healthy Penn is very likely to run over Edgar without much trouble.
