B.J. Penn And Frankie Edgar Set To Rematch At UFC 118
Former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn will get his rematch with Frankie Edgar on August 28th, Fighters Only can reveal after speaking with several key sources. The fight will headline UFC 118, the UFC’s first card in Boston, Massachusetts.
Penn lost the title to Edgar at UFC 112 on April 10th by way of a controversial unanimous decision. Edgar outworked and outmanoeuvred Penn for much of the fight, but it was an extremely close affair that produced three very different judges’ scorecards. One judge gave all five rounds to Edgar, but that score has been widely ridiculed.
Given that Edgar is from New Jersey it would seem to make sense to put his first title defense on the big Northeast card.
The rematch will be one of the most interesting fights of 2010 given how incredibly close the first fight was. Penn did look somewhat uninterested at times during the bout which was a shocking change from the fights he had lost in his career prior to UFC 112. In those other losses Penn seemed desperate and willing to do everything in his power to find a way to win, against Edgar he seemed like he just wanted to score enough points to get by.
In the end his effort was deemed to little on the judges cards although many fans and media (myself included) felt that he had edged out Edgar three rounds to two.
