In a final bit of housecleaning on Adam Carriker’s trade from the Rams to the Redskins, Rick Maese of the Washington Post reports that the teams will swap 7th-round picks (with the Redskins moving up) as well as 5th-round picks. While the swap of 7th-rounders only amounts to the Skins moving up three spots, from 211 to 208, it certainly marks a change in philosophy in Washington, with seemingly greater emphasis placed on maximizing value in the draft.

Overall, landing a former first-rounder in the 25 year-old Carriker for merely moving down in the fifth-round (as well as moving up three spots in the 7th-round) is nothing short of a coup for Washington. While Carriker has been injury-prone in his short NFL career, if he can fulfill even a portion of the promise that made him a first-round selection, Washington will have landed a core contributor at minimal cost. And if injuries continue to derail his career, the Skins should be able to shrug it off, considering how little of an investment they’ve made in him.
It’s certainly a new era in our nation’s capital with the new Redskins brain trust making potentially prescient trades.
