Adrian Gonzalez Homers For Fourth Straight Game, But Reds End Padres’ Eight-Game Winning Streak

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Ramon Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-deciding hit in the eighth inning, as the Reds halted the Padres' eight-game winning streak with a 5-4 decision on a rainy afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Jay Bruce finished with three hits, an RBI and scored the winning run for Cincinnati, which won for just the third time in 11 games to avoid the three- game sweep. Seven of the Reds' eight wins have come in their final at-bat.

Scott Rolen went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three runs scored, and Arthur Rhodes (1-1) was awarded the win in relief of Homer Bailey, who allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in a six-inning start.

Adrian Gonzalez homered for the fourth consecutive game and Kyle Blanks added a two-run double for San Diego, which was on its longest winning streak since a 10-game span from May 15-25 of last season.

Mike Adams (0-1) allowed the tying and go-ahead runs in his outing behind Clayton Richard, who yielded three runs on seven hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings for the Padres.

With the Reds down 4-3, Rolen opened the eighth with a base hit to left. Two batters later, Bruce lined a shot into the right-field corner, and the relay throw got away from Gonzalez, allowing Rolen to score the tying run. Bruce moved up to third on the error and came in on Hernandez’s opposite-field single to right.

In the ninth, Nick Hundley worked a two-out walk and Everth Cabrera came in to pinch-run, promptly sealing second and advancing to third on Ryan Hanigan's errant throw.

Francisco Cordero walked Tony Gwynn Jr. to put the go-ahead run on first, but the closer got Jerry Hairston Jr. on a deep fly out to center to preserve the win and earn his seventh save of the season.

Neither team scored until the fourth, when Gonzalez took Bailey over the wall in right-center for his sixth homer of the year. David Eckstein singled ahead of the blast.

The hosts tied it in the bottom half on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Bruce and Hernandez, who was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double.

With the score tied, 2-2, in the sixth, Blanks hit a one-hopper off the wall in right-center to score Chase Headley and Will Venable, who reached base with a single and walk, respectively.

Rolen deposited a Richard offering just over the wall in right-center leading off the home half for a 4-3 game.

The Padres play at Florida on Monday, while the Reds have a day off before opening a three-game set at Houston...San Diego was looking for its first three-game sweep in Cincinnati since May 4-6, 2001...Bailey tied a career-high with eight strikeouts...Eckstein had two hits for the Padres, who had won five straight against the Reds dating back to last season.
