This offseason was supposed to be different for the Redskins. They were going to build patiently rather than making the same ill-fated quick-fix moves they’ve made the entire decade. They were going to keep their draft picks and replenish their team with depth. They were going to avoid the derisive “offseason champs” label they’ve deservedly received.
McNabb Trade: New Regime, Same Old Redskins
At least that was the hope. Instead, they made yet another win-now move, trading away high draft picks to get a quarterback on the wrong side of 30. Donovan McNabb is definitely an upgrade on Jason Campbell, but as SB Nation’s Redskins blog Hogs Haven writes, the Redskins still have several holes to fill and now have fewer draft picks to do it.
To say this is a “win now” team is laughable. Competitive … absolutely, but that’s the same diarrhea soup we’ve been served the last ten years. After the draft we’ll have a much clearer picture to analyze this pick, but there are so many holes in this team right now it’s hard to praise this. I’m just hoping Shanahan isn’t falling into the same trap of all the previous coaches where they mortgage the future to win now.
The RB situation is laughable right now. The Redskins are not sniffing a Super Bowl with the current backfield. Same goes for the safeties and LB core. How are you going to fix all this with so few draft picks. Time will tell … which is what I’m afraid of.
The Redskins may now have McNabb, but they don’t have much of a foundation, and now, they have less capacity to build one. As Hogs Haven writes, the Redskins have as many draft picks in the next two seasons (11) as the Eagles have this season. It’s hard to build quality depth that way.
