The obvious question Redskins fans need to ask themselves in the wake of yesterday’s trade for Donovan McNabb is what will happen to their incumbent quarterback, Jason Campbell. Clearly, the Redskins don’t value Campbell highly, considering they didn’t even bother to tell him about the trade.
What Happens To Jason Campbell Now That McNabb Is A Redskin
So it would appear trading Campbell is an inevitability. The question now is, to where, and for how much? ESPN 980 is reporting that several teams - the Bills, Jaguars, Raiders, Panthers and an “unknown team” - are interested in trading for Campbell to help their quarterback situations. As for the price, National Football Post did some follow-up diggingand found that Campbell’s value is probably equivalent to a fourth-round pick.
I asked around this morning about what value Campbell would have in the trade market and the response I got from multiple sources was in the fourth-round range. In reality, both sides win if a deal for Campbell goes down. The ‘Skins get something in return for a player that would be an unrestricted free agent in 2011 - and a player who would serve as a backup to McNabb - and the new club gets a guy who can compete for a starting job at an average price of a fourth-round pick.
If Campbell is indeed dealt for a fourth-round pick, the Redskins are essentially saying that the switch from a 28-year old Campbell to a 33-year old McNabb is worth moving down two rounds in the draft. But hey, at least they’d get their draft pick back.
