United States Soccer has named their provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with forward Charlie Davies left off the team.
United States’ 2010 World Cup Provisional Squad: Davies Omitted From Team
According to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl, Davies was in consideration for the provisional squad until yesterday, but when Davies’ club failed to clear the player, U.S. Soccer decided against bringing him into the national team camp.
The Sochaux attacker, who suffered season-ending injuries in a fatal car accident in October, has been the subject of hope throughout the spring, since news broke that he had returned to training. Last week, reports had Davies missing the World Cup, reports that were later denied by the federation and the player.
Today, U.S. Soccer named their 30-man squad without Davies, instead bringing in Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Findley.
Other forwards who will go to national team camp in Princetion include Jozy Altidore, Eddie Johnson, and Brian Ching, who has been injured this season in Major League Soccer. Also included are two players who man surprise, late pushes: Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez.
In midfield, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley lead a group that features Benny Feilhaber, Ricardo Clark, Jose Francico Torres and newly recovered Stuart Holden. Glasgow Rangers’ DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu make he team despite struggling much of the club season with injuries. Sacha Klejstan and Robbie Rogers were called-in from their Major League Soccer clubs, while Alejandro Bedoya makes the provisional team as a late add to the U.S. pool.
At the back, Oguchi Onyewu will be counted-on to continue his recovery from knee surgery. He is joined by captain Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo and Jonathan Spector. Heath Pearce of FC Dallas is called-in to compete with Bornstein at left back, while Clarence Goodson and Chad Marshall will try to make the team as center half deputies.
The goalkeeping trio is as expected: Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, and Brad Guzan.
The team will start national team camp this Saturday in Princeton, New Jersey, ahead of a May 25 friendly against the Czech Republic in Hartford.
The final United States World Cup roster will be named by June 1, when the team must be trimmed to 23-men.
