On Sunday, the possibility was introduced that Nick Johnson might need surgery on his ailing wrist. Now, Ken Rosenthal confirms that that’s going to be the course of action after all:
Wrist Surgery To Sideline Nick Johnson Into July
Sources: Yankees' Nick Johnson to undergo surgery on right wrist Tuesday. Likely out until July.
Johnson was batting just .167 at the time of his injury, but that average came with a characteristic .388 OBP. Marcus Thames and Randy Winn have benefited the most from his absence, as they’ve each seen their playing time increase with an opening in the lineup. The 27 year old Juan Miranda has been and remains an option off the bench as well, although he isn’t regular material.
Johnson has played in just 195 games since 2007 due to various injuries. This is his ninth stint on the DL, as his has become a name synonymous with fragility.
