At 33-years-old, the 2010 World Cup was likely to be Michael Ballack’s last, but after suffering an ankle injury during Saturday’s FA Cup final, the German captain may have already played his final World Cup match.
Ballack Will Decide International Future After World Cup
Ballack, however, is not ready to be so definitive about his future.
While with the German team at their training camp in Sicily, Ballack was asked about the possibility of participating in the 2012 European Championships. Though focused on getting healthy for the next club season, Ballack would not rule out playing in Germany’s next major international tournament.
“I assume that I will be fit for the start of the new season,” Ballack said.
Ballack said whether he returns to the national team for the 2012 European Championship was one of the questions he would have to consider during his summer break.
“I have to think about some things and sort them out. That had been in the pipeline anyway,” Ballack said.
Euro 2010 will take place in Poland and Ukraine. Germany starts qualification on September 3 in Belgium and is also grouped with Austria, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkey.
