Matt Cain Comes One Mark Reynolds From Perfection, Giants Roll Over DBacks

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Cain was nearly perfect on the mound, tossing a one-hit shutout, as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park.

Cain (3-4) recorded a season-high nine strikeouts while not issuing a walk. The 25-year-old right-hander faced just two batters over the minimum, surrendering a two-out double to Mark Reynolds in the second inning and hitting the Arizona third baseman with one away in the fifth.

Pablo Sandoval homered and knocked in three runs for the Giants, who have won three of four.

Edwin Jackson (3-6) gave up three runs on four hits and five walks over seven innings for Arizona, which has lost five in a row.

Freddy Sanchez singled home Andres Torres to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the first.

Sandoval recorded a sacrifice fly in the third, stroked a run-scoring single two innings later and clubbed a solo homer off Chad Qualls in the eighth. Aaron Rowand's sac fly made it 5-0.

Cain, who snapped a personal three-start losing streak, tossed his second straight complete game and 10th of his career. He has three career shutouts...Cain threw 122 pitches, 83 for strikes...He has given up three or fewer earned runs in nine of his 10 starts this season...Jackson finished with seven strikeouts...The Diamondbacks swept a two-game set against San Francisco from May 19-20 at Chase Field, outscoring the Giants 21-8.
