Tiger Woods has had a bad few months. You may have heard. But while his string of marital infidelities that led to his self-imposed exile have dominated the headlines, there’s also the little matter of his actual play on the golf course. And that is where Woods is finding his latest trouble.
Will Tiger Woods Lose His No. 1 Ranking To Phil Mickelson At The Players?
↵Despite a more-than-respectable fourth-place finish at his post-scandal debut at Augusta, Tiger’s return to golf hasn’t exactly been an unmitigated triumph (see implosion, Quail Hollow). And it might cost him his 258 week grip on the top spot of the world golf rankings. Indeed, the AP’s Doug Ferguson points out that if Tiger fails to finish in the top five and Phil Mickelson wins at the upcoming Players Championship at TPC (aka the mythical “fifth major”), then Woods will cede his top ranking to Lefty (Bonus points for naming the last golfer to unseat Woods, back in 2004-05).
↵This potential fall is due in large part to his prolonged absence from the greens -- his meltdown at Quail Hollow didn’t help either -- and also a result of Mickelson’s own inspired play as of late. Now, the world rankings don’t count for anything...but with so much uncertainty surrounding Woods’ mental and physical state, it’s hard to argue with the idea that Woods isn’t the top golfer at the moment -- and, unthinkably, perhaps no longer a lock to break Jack Nicklaus’ career majors record. Like we said, it’s been a bad few months for Tiger.
