A Minnesota judge in the Starcaps case has ruled that Vikings DTs Kevin and Pat Williams must serve a four-game suspension following a 2008 positive test for a banned diuretic called Bumetanide.
StarCaps Ruling: Judge Rules Suspension Stands, Players Will Appeal
The players have scheduled a court hearing at 2:00 PM on Thursday to appeal the ruling. They will also ask that they be allowed to play during the appeal.
The players reportedly took a diuretic that did not have the banned substance listed as an ingredient. The NFL’s rules indicate a suspension but the players argue that Bumenatide was not listed as an ingredient therefore they did not know they were violating the rules.
The NFL has a strict liability policy that holds players responsible for what goes into their bodies. But the Williamses argued that Minnesota law gives employees an opportunity to explain the innocent use of an otherwise banned product and that the NFL didn’t allow them to explain their use of StarCaps.
With the 2:00 PM appeal on Thursday, this case isn’t over yet.
