Saints defensive end Will Smith was implicated in the StarCaps scandal that broke in 2008, and may finally be forced to pay his penance: Saints coach Sean Payton told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he believes Smith will have to sit out four games in 2011 as a result of that investigation.
Will Smith, Kevin Williams Could Still Face Suspension For StarCaps Involvement
Smith was one of a handful of players who tested positive for a banned substance that was in a dietary substance that was not banned in 2008. In early 2011, after a lengthy legal battle that lasted more than two years, courts upheld suspensions handed down to Smith, Minnesota Vikings Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, and others.
Neither member of the Williams Wall, as Minnesota’s mammoth defensive tackles are known, nor Smith have sat for their suspensions. And all three could consequently be riding the pine when New Orleans begins the 2011 NFL regular season, though only Smith and Kevin Williams remain on NFL rosters. Pat Williams, the NFL’s oldest defensive player in 2010, may elect to retire rather than face a suspension.
