On the heals of the announcement that Montreal will get Major League Soccer’s 19th team, MLS commissioner Don Garber confessed the league is “very focused” on finding a 20th franchise, with the New York City being the league’s preferred destination, according to quotes obtained by the Associated Press.
Major League Soccer Targets New York For 20th Team
“Our attention is very focused on a 20th team as we speak. We’d like that team to be in New York City representing a second team in the tri-state area,” Garber said. “The Red Bulls are very supportive of that and believe that rivalry will help grow the popularity of the sport in the New York metropolitan area. So we’re going to work hard and try to get something done perhaps as early as 2013.”
Garber revealed that the league had been in discussions with the Wilpon family, owners of the New York Mets. The commissioner said those discussions ended over a year ago as the group shifted focus to the opening of Citi Field.
Major League Soccer had also been linked with the Atlanta, Miami, and Tampa markets (amongst others) in their quest to get to twenty teams.
MLS already has one team in the New York market, Red Bull New York - who opened a new facility, Red Bull Arena, earlier this year.
