Facing Rotation Concerns, Cardinals Sign Jeff Suppan Off The Scrap Heap

Time to see if Dave Duncan is really as magic as he’s made out to be.

Jeff Suppan is coming back to the Cardinals.

He will be joining the team in Phoenix and hopes to be active early next week. He will be signing for the pro-rated minimum.

He was released by the Brewers on Monday after going 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in 15 games.

With Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse both disabled, the Cardinals had a hole in their rotation, so they opted for the easy sign in grabbing the available Suppan. The problem: Suppan was terrible with Milwaukee. The hope: before Milwaukee, Suppan was pretty good with St. Louis, posting a 3.95 ERA over three years in the rotation. The Cardinals obviously hope he can rediscover some of what made him successful so long ago.

It’s not the greatest gamble in the world, but there weren’t a lot of options, and with Penny about 4-6 weeks away from returning, Suppan won’t last long if he’s ineffective. Go check out Viva El Birdos for more.
