Chargers Sign WR Josh Reed, Possibly As Vincent Jackson Insurance

The Chargers on Friday agreed to terms with WR Josh Reed.

At first glance, the move appears to be insurance in the instance Vincent Jackson doesn’t sign and get into training camp on time. Reports indicate Jackson may be willing to sit out the entire 2010 season if he doesn’t get a long-term deal to his liking.

A closer look might reveal that this is GM A.J. Smith’s way of playing hardball. He wants to show Jackson he means business and will gladly (OK not gladly) go along without his services the rest of the season.

Coincidentally, Reed was most recently teammates with Terrell Owens in Buffalo. And, no, the Chargers aren’t interested in T.O.

I think SB Nation’s Bolts From The Blue has it right: “Take that Vincent Jackson.”

As insurance for Marcus McNeill -- another holdout similar to Jackson -- the Chargers have already signed Tra Thomas.
