Veteran Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune writes this morning that the holdout for Marcus McNeill and Vincent Jackson don’t appear to be ending anytime soon.

It is increasingly likely that the two players will not sign with the Chargers until after the season’s 10th game. They would come in then because they need six games to earn an accrued season.
Acee writes that it’s also possible both could sit out the entire season. He says they can handle the holdout financially through 2010 if need be.
One key issue Acee points out is that the Chargers on Tuesday will reduce their restricted free agent tenders to 110% of their 2009 salary which would result in a loss of about $2.5 million for each player. If they weren’t going to play for approximately $3 million in 2010, then they’re not going to play for a fraction of that.
The Chargers have gone out and signed an offensive tackle (Tra Thomas) and a receiver (Josh Reed) in their absence. It appears GM A.J. Smith is willing to play hardball.
