UFC On Versus 2 Moved From Salt Lake City To San Diego
In a statement released by the organization Monday, UFC president Dana White cited a lack of ticket sales as the main reason the UFC on VERSUS 2 event was being moved.
According to White, it’s the first time in the company’s history a venue has been changed after tickets already went on sale.
“Our television ratings in Salt Lake City have always been strong,” White said. “When we finally found the opportunity to bring a UFC event there with a great card, I was very surprised and disappointed in ticket sales.
“As a result, for the first time in UFC history, I decided to pull the plug and move this August 1st event to the San Diego Sports Arena.”
As mentioned above, this is a first. There was speculation by some that the poor ticket sales may have a tie to the strong Mormon religious base of Salt Lake City, this has not been confirmed and likely never will be given any sort of true confirmation. The only thing that needs to be said is that there were poor ticket sales and the event was moved.
I wouldn’t take this as any sort of sign that the UFC is in trouble or anything of that nature. Not every city is going to be hot in terms of sales and honestly it’s pretty amazing how long it took for the UFC to finally hit one of those cities. Having the ability to move venues is a luxury that no other MMA promotion currently has.
