The first time a team gets to the College World Series, they’re supposed to be a little intimidated. They’re supposed to show some nerves. Well, I guess we can call TCU uncooperative since apparently, they don;t like to do what they’re supposed to. In their first College World Series appearance, TCU is handling Florida St., who has been to 20 College World Series, like they are the old vets. As the two teams head to the seventh inning, the Horned Frogs hold a 7-1 lead and have shown no signs of giving it away.
2010 College World Series: TCU Not Afraid On National Stage
TCU’s five runs in the first inning were the most in a first inning by a team debuting in the College World Series since Wichita St. in 1982. They added to that with a run in the third and then Bryan Holaday hit his 14th home run on the season to give the Horned Frogs their 7-1 edge. The game could have become a laugher in the sixth, but TCU left the bases loaded.
Despite their inability to put the nail in the coffin, TCU has never been threatened because of the sensational work on the mound by Matt Purke. If teams are supposed to have nerves the first time they go to Omaha, freshmen are definitely supposed to feel it. Not so for Purke. The Texas Rangers’ first round pick a year ago allowed one unearned run in the first inning and has been on cruise control ever since. He’s struck out six and held the Seminoles to just three hits through six innings as the freshmen looks anything but. With a live fastball then late break on his slingshot slider, there’s not much anyone can do to hit the kid.
Who said experience matters? Whoever did forgot to tell TCU.
