With a strike out to start the bottom half of the seventh, UCLA starting pitcher Trevor Bauer set a new school record. It looked like any other strike out, but it was the sophomore’s 151st of the season, breaking the single-season UCLA record set by Pete Janicki in 1992. For good measure, he added another to end the seventh inning, his 11th of the game.
2010 College World Series: UCLA’s Trevor Bauer Sets Record With Bruins Cruising
While Bauer has been cruising since some early game issues, the UCLA offense is getting the job done. A single and stolen base by Dean Espy got the Bruins going in the sixth. After a ground out moved him to third, a wild pitch allowed Espy to trot home for a 8-3 UCLA lead.
In the seventh, UCLA added to that lead. Steve Rodriguez just missed out on a home run when the ball went off the top of the wall in right field. Nevertheless, Rodriguez was able to trot into second for a double before scoring on a single by Beau Amaral.
With a 9-3 lead, UCLA is in great shape. Not only are they cruising versus the nation’s number three national seed, but with Bauer going deep into the game, they aren’t making their bullpen work too hard. Now, they just need to finish out the game for their first College World Series win in school history.
