David Villa Faces Possible Suspension After Striking Honduras Player

David Villa righted Spain’s ship in South Africa on Monday, scoring both goals in Spain’s 2-0 win over Honduras. So that was good. What was bad, however, was when Villa struck Honduras defender Emilio Izaguirre in the face at the end of the first half.

Villa said afterward that he was simply reacting to Izaguirre stepping on his foot, and that he “wasn’t proud” of his action. Regardless, that kind of thing is not legal in soccer, as you probably guessed. As such, FIFA has not ruled out suspending Villa after they read Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura’s post-match report (even though he never saw it happen).

“At the moment we have no information on David Villa. We will wait for the referee’s report before making any decisions,” said a Fifa spokesman.

Villa told Spanish broadcaster Canal Plus: “It’s not something that I am proud of. They’re just instincts, in this case I wasn’t expecting [Izaguirre] to tread on me. I was merely standing there and the reaction was to stick my arm out. I’ll try in future to keep my cool.”

Exactly. Chill out, David Villa.
