Pro Bowl Colts receiver Reggie Wayne announced that he will skip the team’s upcoming three-day mandatory minicamp this weekend because of a contract dispute.
Reggie Wayne, Seeking New Contract, Skips Colts Mandatory Minicamp
With two years remaining on his current deal, in which he scheduled to make $5.47 million this coming season and $5.95 million in 2011, Wayne wants to renegotiate a deal that would make him among the highest paid receivers in the league.
On Twitter, Adam Schefter reported this statement from Wayne:
I have tremendous respect for Jim Irsay, Bill Polian and the entire Indianapolis Colts organization, but at this time, we are in disagreement concerning my contract situation. Therefore, I will not be attending this weekend’s mini-camp.
I will continue training diligently in Florida as I have each off-season since my rookie year, to ensure I am fully ready for season.
I hope that a fair resolution can be reached in the not-too-distant future that allows me to achieve my goal of playing my entire career with the Indianapolis Colts." And there we have it - one more no show.
The Colts are currently working on a new blockbuster contract for quarterback Peyton Manning. Once completed, the team is likely to enter into renegotiations with Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis, who has also skipped offseason workouts.
According to Jason La Canfora, Wayne has already discussed his absence with head coach Jim Caldwell.
