Though The Streak May Be Over, Ubaldo Jimenez Spun Another Great Game

Ubaldo Jimenez allowed a home run to Conor Jackson in the eighth inning on Sunday, ending his streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. However, lest anyone be disappointed, here are some encouraging facts:

  • The Rockies still won, proving that Ubaldo doesn’t literally need to throw a shutout every time
  • The two runs allowed tied Ubaldo’s season high
  • Ubaldo generated 16 swinging strikes

That last point is a fun one. Jimenez threw 118 pitches Sunday evening. Arizona hitters swung and missed 16 times. Padres hitters swung and missed 16 times against Jimenez on May 3rd, but Jimenez threw two more pitches in that game than today’s, meaning today’s game featured his best swinging strike rate of the year.

Jimenez wasn’t going to throw shutout after shutout for the rest of the season. He was due to allow some extra-base hits, and what’s really important is that, even with some extra-base hits, Ubaldo Jimenez is still absolutely terrific.
