Tiger Woods’ Hope For A Third St. Andrews Win Likely Dashed

If Tiger Woods were to win the 2010 British Open, it would make his fourth Open Championship win and his third at hallowed St. Andrews, but perhaps even more importantly, it would mark a return to the top. Woods, after all, hasn’t won a Major since 2008, and has been plagued since by injuries and the personal issues we’re all well familiar with.

Unfortunately for Woods, a win at St. Andrews this year is extremely unlikely. Woods really needed to make a charge in Round 3 after a 1-over Round 2 that snapped his momentum; instead, his 1-over Round 3 on Saturday has brought him to 3-under for the tournament.

For good measure, though, let’s examine Tiger’s chances.

As of this writing, leader Louis Oosthuizen stands at 13-under with six holes left to play in Round 3, and 18 golfers stand between him and Woods. Supposing Oostheiven doesn’t make any further headway, a theoretical 10-stroke comeback on Tiger’s part would tie a PGA Tour record. This record was set by Paul Lawrie at the 1999 Open Championship, but he required help from leader Jean Van de Velde, and as you know, he got it.

In short, those clinging to hope of a win for Tiger Woods must hope not only that at least one man at the top suffers a meltdown, but that Woods plays the sort of golf on Sunday that approaches an 18-hole course record. It’s more realistic to hope for Woods to end with a top-ten finish and leave with something to build upon.
