Özil is in the last year of his deal at the Weser Stadium, and as his father Mustafa told a Turkish paper, the midfielder is intent on moving to the Santiago Bernabeu:
“We promised (Real Madrid president) Florentino Perez that if Bremen did not let Mesut go now, then next year he would come for free when his contract expires,” his father Mustafa told Turkish paper Hirriyet.
”He also knows that our word is sacred and that we thought out things responsibly before deciding this.
Özil’s father said Bremen had received an offer of €30 million from Internazionale only to have the player reject the move. Real Madrid is said to have offered €9 million and then €14 million, with both bids rejected by Bremen.
The Germans host Sampdoria in a Champions League playoff today. Were Özil to appear for Werder Bremen, he would be cup-tied and ineligible to appear for another club in Champions League group stage.
A club could add Özil to their European roster in winter, when they are allowed to put one newly-acquired player on their UEFA-registered squad.
