Victor Cruz’s six-catch, 145-yard, three-touchdown performance in Monday’s preseason opener for the Giants certainly has fans of Big Blue buzzing about another potential target for Eli Manning. If anything, it can’t be great news for fellow Giants wideout Sinorice Moss, who might find retaining a roster spot difficult if Cruz continues to thrive.
What To Make Of The Fantasy Buzz On Victor Cruz
The rookie free agent’s breakout is redolent to the game Mario Manningham had in Week 2 of last season against Dallas, in which Manningham caught 10 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. That performance helped spur the second-year receiver to place second on the league in receiving.
Of course, there’s an obvious difference, with Manningham doing that in the regular season, while Cruz, meanwhile, put up stats in the second half of a preseason game in his NFL debut.
Nevertheless, it would be foolish to dismiss what happened.
Cruz’s one-handed touchdown grab, easily the most impressive play of the evening, came against Dwight Lowry, who, while not exactly the Jets’ best corner, is coming into his third year in the league.
At this point, it’s a wait and see deal. Giants coach Tom Coughlin has been gushing over the rookie, saying he’s had an outstanding camp. Of course, one would prefer to see more than one staggering preseason outing before committing a valuable pick. That means it’s difficult to pin Cruz as anything above a late round sleeper, but given some of the flashes he made, it might be a savvy pick to make, especially in keeper leagues.
