Jets, Nick Mangold On Verge Of Seven-Year, $55 Million Contract

The New York Jets have been in the news lately for contract talks.

First it was D'Brickashaw Ferguson's $60+ million deal that was signed this offseason. Second, there's Darrelle Revis and his holdout. Third, there's David Harris, who is reportedly content that he won't get a new deal until after 2010.

Now for some good news. The Jets and center Nick Mangold have agreed on a seven-year, $55 million deal, according to the NY Daily News.

The Daily News has learned that talks reopened a week ago after both sides initially appeared resigned to the idea that a deal wouldn’t get done until after the season. Two weeks ago, Mangold told The News that he was resigned to the idea that no deal would get done until after the season. “I’m not happy about it, but I accepted that fact,” he said at the time.

Apparently they’ve agreed in principle on a deal. The sticking point right now is the guaranteed money, but it’s expected to exceed $20 million.

SB Nation’s Gang Green Nation says this is a big move for the Jets.

Earlier Mangold said that he would love to be with the Jets long term, and Rex added that locking the best center in the league up would be a huge step for the Jets. Well today that’s happened. Nick has continually improved since being drafted with the 29th pick of the 2006 draft.
