2011 MLB Regular Season Scheduled To Begin In March

With the 2011 MLB schedules now released, we can begin to wade through all the information to identify key changes and dates. We’ll tackle events of note for individual teams later on, but for now, here are the most significant general facts:

  1. The proposed two-game series between the Diamondbacks and Giants that would take place in Taiwan in late March is still under review. As such, it is not included in the schedules released Tuesday night. If it’s approved, only minor changes will have to be made.
  2. As of now, the regular season is set to begin with five games on Thursday, March 31st. Spring training will be shortened accordingly.
  3. The rest of the teams get going the next day, with 11 games scheduled for Friday, April 1st.
  4. The All-Star Game will be played on July 12nd at Chase Field.
  5. The regular season will end on Wednesday, September 28th.

2011 will mark the first time the season hasn’t begun on a Sunday or Monday since 1998. It will also mark the first time the season hasn’t ended on a Sunday since 1990.
