2011 MLB Schedules Set To Be Released Wednesday Morning

Though the 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is still very much alive and well, for a number of teams and their fans, it isn’t too early to start thinking about the future. It’s convenient, then, that schedules for the 2011 regular season are set to be released on Wednesday.

The 2011 @MLB Regular Season Schedule will be officially released tomorrow 9/15 at 10:00am ETless than a minute ago via TweetDeck

Of course, as with pretty much any announcement of this magnitude, we already know some information ahead of time. Most notably:

  • The season will begin - at latest - on Friday, April 1st, eschewing the usual Sunday evening start. As a result of this, the regular season will end on Wednesday, September 28th. The schedule was moved up in an effort to conclude the playoffs before November. The postseason is set to start on either September 30th or October 1st, and Game 1 of the World Series is set for October 19th. Said Bud Selig on the matter:
"Anything we could do to finish in October,'' commissioner Bud Selig told USA TODAY, "is what I wanted to do. It shows how serious we are in doing this. I feel very good about it, and am pleased at everybody's reaction.''

  • The season could begin in late March with the Giants playing two games against the Diamondbacks in Taiwan. Details of the plan are still being worked out and nothing is official, and it seems it will remain unsettled through tomorrow. However, it appears to be likely. The two games would be Diamondbacks "home" games, and the teams would return stateside on March 27th before resuming the regular season days later.

The entire picture - aside from the Taiwan trip resolution - will be revealed in the morning, including Opening Day matchups, home openers, and interleague opponents. It’s also possible that some leaked schedules start to find their way to the internet between now and the official time of release. Stay tuned to this StoryStream for continued coverage.
